Part 1: HIS BROTHER'S KEEPER Listen

This December 1st will mark the 19th World AIDS Day.  In 26 years Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome has traveled to every corner of the globe.  The disease has killed 23 million people and today 40 million people are living with the virus.  While Anti-retroviral drugs are prolonging lives, roughly 4.3 million new cases occur annually.  Today we take you to a Buddhist monastery, turned AIDS hospice just outside of Lopburi, Thailand.  You'll hear from Maryknoll priest, Mike Bassano who has spent the last 8 years as a caregiver at the hospice.

Part 2: TODAY'S LEPERS Listen

Our Kathy Golden spent a day at the Prabhat Namphu Monastery and Hospice and tried to keep up with Father Mike.  In a pavilion near the entrance, several corpses of former patients are on display as these victims wanted others to witness the ravages of this disease.  One of Kathy's most lasting memories is of standing before a Buddhist alter that rests atop at least 7,000 bags of the cremated ashes of deceased AIDS victims whose families choose not to claim their relatives' remains.  Father Mike Bassano speaks of compassion.
